The Lyn Valley Society developed out of an original Residents Association which was formed in Lynton in the 1990s. At that time Lynton had lost some of its facilities including the Cottage Hospital and Methodist church and the Town Hall was also struggling to find money for its upkeep and refurbishment as a listed building. It needed improvements to its heating system, kitchen and access for people with disabilities. Following a large public meeting the Residents Association was formed and began fund raising by holding coffee mornings, lunches, setting up a Treble Chance Lottery and a Titbits exhibition of local interest relating to George Newnes who had paid for the Town Hall to be built 100 years before. Donations were also received from individuals and local groups and over time sufficient funds were raised to install underfloor heating in the Main Hall, new electrics, a new kitchen, a lift, wheelchair access and a toilet suitable for people with disabities. In addition funds were used to make essential building repairs particularly to the windows and masonry.
The Lyn Valley Society was formed in 2001 by the small group of people left in the Residents Association and continued raising funds for the upkeep of our amazing Town Hall but also to give donations to support local Community Projects. Membership has changed over the years and we are now a small group of 12 members who are all loyal and hard working volunteers. We make decisions on requests for donations at our monthly meetings. Our most recent big project was the total refurbishment of the Jubilee Room in 2017 which has used up most of the original refurbishment funds.

Being a member of a Civic Society means supporting a group that wants the place where you live to be a nice environment with plenty of public open spaces where you can walk and children can play and where heritage plays its part. Membership is open to everyone irrespective of age, gender, race, disability or religion and the Civic Society movement throughout the United Kingdom encourages everyone to both enjoy and look after the place they have chosen to live through the protection and development of their area.
Torbay Civic Society was founded in 1976 and today it not only endorses the mission of heritage and conservation but also arranges a wide number of social activities that bring members together from time to time. These include the rather special monthly “Coffee Morning with a Difference” event and coach outings, lectures, walks afternoon teas and an annual dinner and other forms of activity more often than not held during the day.

Our society dates back to 1968, when many local citizens became very concerned about the adverse effect of some planning decisions on the town and the need to protect the local environment. It was therefore agreed to form a local civic society to safeguard the future development of Tiverton and its nearby surroundings. “WATCH & WARD” became our motto, and since then a major aim of the society has been to remain alert to significant changes affecting the local environment, and to prevent or reduce any adverse consequences arising from them. We are not alone in this concern – there are some 800 civic societies in England. Many of these, including Tiverton Civic Society, are members of Civic Voice which provides regular information about national issues, campaigns for change and organizes meetings and training for members.
The Tiverton Civic Society is now a Registered Charity (No 1043675) that cares for the beauty, history and character of Tiverton and its surroundings. We aim to protect and preserve the good things we all enjoy, and try to change or influence for the better developments which cause general concern. We are totally non-political and can take a long term and independent view of the many changes that are now affecting us all. We need your ideas, knowledge and enthusiasm.

The Moor Meadows community group was established in 2015 by a small friendly group of local people on Dartmoor. Our aim is to help each other in conserving, restoring and creating wildflower rich grasslands in the landscape of Dartmoor and beyond.
We are a not-for-profit organisation run by volunteers passionate about meadows. A meadows email exchange forum was set up so members can communicate with each other, plus a series of Meadow Open Days, informative talks, inspirational conferences and practical workshops in order to increase wildlife knowledge and habitat management skills.

The Campaign officially began in October 2010 with a launch event that saw London’s historic tailoring street Savile Row transformed into a pasture upon which fifty sheep grazed. Over 100 companies participated in Wool Week and thousands of consumers took part in activities such as knitting and felting. Yellow sheep were even spotted queuing outside Selfridges department store on Oxford Street.
2011 saw the launch of Wool Modern, an exhibition opened by His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, showcasing the very best in fashion and design in wool. Wool Modern featured the work of seminal designers such as Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood.
The Campaign for Wool was also introduced to key international markets in Australia, Spain, Netherlands, Germany, Norway and Japan.
In 2012, the Campaign presented the first ever ‘Wool House’ the World’s biggest celebration of wool featuring 10 days of interior design, fashion, craftsmanship and textile excitement. Read more about Wool House here.
In October 2012, the Campaign launched Wool School, its first major educational initiative. 12 top retailers including Topshop, Hobbs and Jigsaw joined forces with design students at leading universities in order to create a series of wool sweaters which were sold in stores. 5% of profits have been put back into educating the next generation of designers about the benefits of using wool.
In 2012 the Campaign for Wool launched in China, while our 2013 Wool Week celebrations started in September with the launch of Campaign for Wool Italy. They will continue throughout the Autumn season in Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Korea, Japan and China.
