The Devon and Exeter Institution is a thriving Independent Library and Educational Charity, we welcome new members of all ages.
Our founders established the Institution in 1813, in order to promote ‘the general diffusion of Science, Literature and the Arts, and for illustrating the Natural and Civil History of the county of Devon and the History of the City of Exeter’. This resolution remains at the centre of our strategy to this day.
The Institution occupies a Medieval building, originally owned by the Cathedral. It was inherited by the Courtenay family in the 17th Century and used as their town house for over 150 years. In 1814, ‘200 Gentlemen of the City’ took ownership of 7 Cathedral Close and adapted the double-courtyard layout to create two elegant Georgian rooms. These rooms functioned as both library and a museum; museum objects were later donated to form the foundation collection of the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in 1868.
Today our two galleried libraries hold a unique historical book collection, virtually unchanged, and collections of maps, prints, drawings and our fine and decorative art. The Library and collections lie at the heart of the Institution and provide inspiration and a place for research and reading, educational activities, cultural events and lectures.

Founded by Josie Sutcliffe and Natalie McGrath, Dreadnought South West’s aim is to connect individuals and communities through telling great and courageous stories about women and girls, providing bold, high-quality arts and heritage work that inspires, educates and raises awareness throughout the South West and beyond.
Our first major project celebrated and marked the centenary of The Great 1913 Women’s Suffrage Pilgrimage, where women walked from Land’s End to Hyde Park demanding their right to vote. Dreadnought toured throughout the South West a new play Oxygen, and in addition there were forty-five arts and heritage way-marker projects led by individuals and communities along the pilgrimage route. All of these were inspired by the stories of women walking and protesting peacefully. It has been a model for Dreadnought’s work ever since.
Having been awarded Emergency Funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to support our resilience and vision during this unprecedented time, we were excited to be able to continue our work in 2020. This included a series of free online workshops in September; including Choir Leader, Claire Ingleheart, Award winning Playwright, Paula B. Stanic, Community Activist, Sandhya Dave and Poet and Rapper Silai Estatira.

The Government commissioned Each Home Counts Review acknowledged the importance of consumers receiving trusted, impartial advice on energy efficiency. The Review also made recommendations on how energy efficiency advice could be improved.
This site has been developed in conjunction with the Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy. Recommendations you receive using the services on this site, are based on standards developed for Government as a way of understanding how houses and flats use energy, and how your home’s energy use could be improved.

Taking practical steps to improve our lives, and those of generations to come, by reducing our negative impact on the world - starting in the Lyn valley.
This group is about the local action we take to play our part in combatting the devastation of our environment.
There are other ways we communicate too.

Upstream Thinking is South West Water’s multi-award-winning approach to keeping our drinking and bathing water clean and affordable by stopping pollutants entering our rivers and streams.
Working with a range of partners, including Devon Wildlife Trust, the programme supports farmers who are ‘upstream’ of key water supplies with grants and advice so that they can manage their business with clean water and a healthy natural environment in mind.
Through this programme, Devon Wildlife Trust’s Working Wetlands project is providing confidential, expert advice and practical solutions to farmers in six Devon catchments. The project has been working with farmers for more than ten years and our advisors understand farming and the challenges farmers face.

The focus of the Exmoor Mires Partnership is to 're-wet' the bog following generations of peat-cutting and the creation of drainage ditches which has caused the mires to dry out.
The drying action causes oxidation of exposed peat bogs which releases large quantities of carbon into the atmosphere and has reduced the water-holding capacity of the moors. Drained bogs release Dissolved Organic Carbon (peaty coloured water) into the headwaters, which has to be removed at Drinking water treatment plants.
A 'healthy' bog accumulates carbon and absorbs CO2 from the atmosphere so we have been restoring the uplands of Exmoor through blocking the drainage ditches using sustainable methods, local materials and local contractors to retain water and carbon.
Research undertaken, by the University of Exeter through CREWW, supports the restoration efforts in these landscapes through quantifying the effect of upland restoration on habitat status, water quality and natural flood management.
Why is re-wetting the moors important?
During periods of heavy rainfall, re-wetted peat bogs slow down the run-off of water from land before steadily releasing it. This increased water storage has the effect of reducing the fluctuation of river flows, making flooding less likely, reducing soil erosion and the amount of silt entering rivers.
