Lower Town Place in the centre of the village was for sale. HOLD is a Community Benefit Society with Charitable status that has now bought the site so it can be redeveloped for community uses
The old Lower Town Place farmyard has lain derelict for several years and recently was the subject of a very unpopular planning application for EIGHT houses, quite similar to the ones on our side of Copplestone.
The owner has now agreed to discuss the future of the site with HOLD and the agents have indicated that all the developers who are interested would wish to amend the planning application anyway.
This gives the residents of Lapford an unique opportunity to work together to acquire all or part of the site for a new, up-to-date Community Hall in the heart of the village, with improved facilities for all sorts of activities and to to include a new Youth Club provision.

In August 2016 the people of Cheriton Fitzpaine learned that their village shop and Post Office would cease trading just before Christmas when the owners would be retiring.
Many people were very concerned about the loss of such an important community asset and a small group of like-minded people arranged a public meeting to see how the wider community felt. All the households in the area were consulted via a questionnaire and this highlighted great support for the setting up of a community-run shop.

Our vision is of a world where creative energy drives environmental change
Our mission is to provide a tool for local recycling and creative engagement to empower the community to live sustainably.
This excellent idea comes from Precious Plastic, a global community, who in the true spirit of social enterprise, put their idea out there for us all to use. You can view all the designs, products and community here: https://preciousplastic.com/ . Basically, it involves recycling plastic by shredding it, heating it and remoulding it into new useful/artistic creations. The plans for building the machines are open source and they are simple and quite cheap to build. We plan to use this to recycle plastic which is otherwise difficult to recycle and reduce transport and other associated costs by recycling locally. We think of this as a fun project to bring the community together, engage with recycling and plastic waste issues and get creative. Even better, this process can create high quality plastic products which can be sold.

This is the Earl Of Portsmouth Preservation Society's 'Save The Earl' Community Project, a small local community group passionate about saving our traditional pub in the heart of our village in Chawleigh. We are looking to raise enough money to purchase the pub and run it as a viable, flourishing business geared towards catering for the needs of our local community and visitors coming to this beautiful area.

Founded in 1975, the CDLHS includes a friendly cross section of people from Chulmleigh and the surrounding villages who share an active interest in local history and that of the South West of England.
Our aim is to encourage enthusiasm in local history through an organised and exciting programme of events and outings, and to obtain, preserve and develop a record of the history of this area. This we do through a comprehensive series of archives, lectures, stories, interviews, records and photographs. We have an active and enthusiastic committee, involved in organising events, producing publications, newsletters and hosting tours around Chulmleigh. New ideas are always welcome.
The Society has a winter programme of monthly meetings involving speakers on a variety of topics. These are held from September to March, currently in the Chulmleigh Pavilion on Mondays from 7.30pm. In the summer from April to August we visit various places of historical interest, by coach or car. In September, we also hold our AGM, together with a Social evening with entertainment.

The Sustainable Food Trust is a registered charity that was founded by Patrick Holden in 2011 in response to the worsening human and environmental crises that are associated with the vast majority of today’s food and farming systems.
His observation was that, for all of the hard work of food and environmental organisations over the last half century or so, there were still a number of major barriers preventing large scale uptake of sustainable food production and healthy diets. These include the lack of an enabling policy and economic environment for sustainable food production and consumption; a tendency towards reductionist and siloed thinking amongst scientists and some campaigning organisations; and a myriad of conflicting messages, often perpetuated by those with vested interests, leading to considerable confusion amongst consumers and policymakers alike about what to eat to be healthy whilst at the same time supporting just and sustainable food systems.
Our vision is for food and farming systems which nourish the health of the planet and its people.
Our mission is to accelerate the transition to more sustainable food and farming systems.
To achieve this, we work catalytically on a global scale to influence and enhance the work of other organisations, rather than replicating existing initiatives.
Our work is informed by the belief that policymakers, businesses and civil society organisations will be empowered to act when there is sufficient pressure from informed public opinion. Therefore, we work at many levels ranging from that of senior policymakers to consumer groups and individual consumers, and we ensure the information and policy direction we provide is grounded in good science.
The combination of our practitioner experience and large network of influential global contacts sets us apart from other food and environmental organisations. Both Chief Executive (Patrick Holden) and Policy Director (Richard Young) have been combining organic farming with sustainable food advocacy for over 40 years, and several other staff members are practically involved in farming or community food systems.
The SFT became a UK registered charity in August 2012, and we work from a small office in Bristol, UK.
