Helping smaller businesses achieve their ambitions
We have had huge influence on making change and influencing policy – recently securing a £940 million reduction in business rates for small firms; a freeze on the VAT threshold as well as on fuel duty. We also persuaded the Government to adopt a reform package to stop late payments to small businesses.
We’ve successfully campaigned for small firms to be excluded from the IR35 extension; and secured a £675 million Future High Street Fund. We successfully campaigned for the abolishment of the unfair ‘staircase tax’ and the halving of apprenticeship training co-investment.
The 5.8 million small businesses in the UK make up 99.3 per cent of all private sector businesses. They contribute a staggering amount to the UK’s local and national economies, as well as being a major source of employment. We encourage our members to get involved with our work – from engaging with our campaigns, to standing in our local and national member volunteer elections. Together, we are stronger.

Born in 1575 in the hamlet of Fremington, John Penrose became a successful cloth merchant and in 1620 was the Mayor of Barnstaple. On his death in 1624, his Will provided: “(purchase) some convenient room or place within the borough and parish of Barnstaple, fit to erect an almshouse upon, and in the same being so purchased, should, with part of the same money, erect thereupon such and so many several rooms for an almshouse, as they in their discretion should think fit”
In these times it was not unusual for a wealthy person to make a bequest in memory of their name and this handsome bequeath provided for the poor of the borough of Barnstaple and five mile radius.
The provision was used to purchase reclaimed land fronting the main route from Exeter north of the river Taw and a short distance to the east of the old town walls. On completion this building stood alone, with a long symmetrical frontage intended to be viewed from the river and beyond, and bringing to the attention of travellers who passed by, the benevolence of John Penrose.

Our hub is right in the heart of this great city. Rich with art, theatre and music with a variety of arts venues and independent theatres like the Northcott Theatre, Exeter Phoenix, Lemon Grove, the Old Firehouse and the Corn Exchange, Exeter is a great place for musicians with plenty of gigging and work experience opportunities. Plus if you want the best of both worlds this is certainly the place for you – with the rolling Devonshire hills just a short drive away from the lively buzz of the city centre, you can’t go too far wrong. Oh, and the most famous music festival of all is a small hop away!
Exeter also has its share of music related enterprises including the famous Manson’s Guitar Works, who make guitars for the likes of Matt Bellamy (Muse) and Mikey Demus (Skindred). And our Exeter centre boasts some incredible teaching facilities and a dedicated, passionate team.

The Green Register trains construction professionals from all disciplines of the industry to build better, more sustainable buildings. Whether you are interested in a new home for you or a client, workplaces, cinemas, stadiums or any other types of building, by sharing our passions and knowledge of energy, health and wellbeing, land use, materials, pollution, transport, waste and water we can support you to reduce your building's impact on the environment.
We cover all aspects of sustainable building practices from healthy buildings, passivhaus and retrofitting older buildings through to highly technical training sessions on the holistic management of heat, moisture and air tightness. This last point is essential to get right if we are to reduce the performance gap so commonly found in buildings.
Though we are based in Bristol, which has developed its green credentials across numerous sectors, our courses take place across Britain. We are independent, self-funded and not-for-profit and grateful for the support of our members, partners, steering group, delegates, clients and venues to support the bettering of the construction industry.

With hundreds of miles of coast and nearby islands like Lundy and the Isles of Scilly, it is also an important place for seabirds.
Whatever the time of year, there is a bird spectacle to enjoy. Whether it is hundreds of avocets wintering close to our Exe Estuary reserves, flocks of ducks and wading birds at West Sedgemoor, or the summertime heathland delights of Dartford warblers and nocturnal nightjars at reserves like Arne and Aylesbeare, the south-west rarely fails to impress!

Schumacher College is an international college for ecological studies offering masters programmes, short courses and a horticulture residency. We focus on interactive and experiential education to develop practical skills and strategic thinking required to face 21st century challenges.
For nearly 30 years, Schumacher College has been at the forefront of engaging ecological, economic, and social challenges at our campus on the Dartington estate in South Devon and around the planet. With our roots in a holistic approach to relationships with one another and with the more-than-human Earth, Schumacher College has developed a portfolio of innovative learning programmes to help students address the ever-changing challenges we face in the world today.
We are a vegetarian college and we continually strive to be as self-sufficient as possible. At present we grow almost 50% of the food we eat, the rest we source as locally as possible. All students and staff are involved with cooking, cleaning and gardening which helps to foster a sense of community and is a great opportunity to mix with all members of the College.
