Steam trains through rolling countryside, with views out to wild moorland and the rugged coastline.
Originally opened in 1898, and closed in 1935; what you can see today at Woody Bay is just the beginning of an exciting project to rebuild one of the world's most famous and picturesque narrow-gauge railways; the legendary Lynton & Barnstaple Railway.
This initial section allows our visitors to experience a taste of what will one day become one of the ultimate narrow-gauge treasures of the world as they once again travel by train along the original route above the delightful Heddon Valley near Parracombe in Exmoor's National Park. This is the longest-closed section of railway line to have ever been reopened solely through volunteer effort anywhere in the world.
The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway is a "non-profit" organisation offering narrow-gauge train rides at Woody Bay in Exmoor National Park, with one aim: to restore fully the legendary Lynton & Barnstaple Railway.

Southwood is a small wood in the Taw Valley, North Devon whose owners aim to improve its bio-diversity.
Southwood is on a steep hill on the sides of the Taw valley. South-facing with quite heavy, clay soil it is predominantly oak that appears to have colonised a previously cleared stretch of woodland about 60 years ago. The trees are densely packed, which means that there is little lateral growth and a high canopy that excludes a lot of light from reaching the woodland floor. Along with the oak there is occasional ash, beech, hazel and birch but they are generally struggling to compete.
Rhododendron had invaded more than 50% of the wood, but has now largely been eliminated with the help of a grant from Countryside Stewardship. Holly has also invaded and there is still virtually no under-storey due to the lack of light and to vigorous competition from the invasive species. The central part of the wood was 30% thinned in 2018 and we are just beginning to see what a difference this can make. The wood has a Spring that supplies water to the local hamlet of Kingford and its overflow feeds a new, small pond. There is a track through the wood that is adequate for 4x4 and a network of paths is being developed. A new track that can provide access for a compact tractor is planned in the East side of the wood.

We set up this website in 2012 to promote locally produced charcoal. At that time we had been producing charcoal for 3 years and had ourselves been surprised by the environmental and ethical differences between locally produced and imported charcoal. As we have enough customers for our charcoal, it seemed sensible to promote other local producers especially as we were getting inquiries from all over the country. Clearly it is better that these people buy charcoal from a producer based close to them.

Courage Copse Creatives is a small woodland enterprise based in the Taw Valley, North Devon run by owner/managers Katy and Vince.
We specialise in producing woodland products that are both sustainable and ethical, in particular our top quality barbecue charcoal and Pure bioChar. The majority of our products are made from or grown in our own woodland, Courage Copse. We use low impact management methods including timber extraction with horses.
As well as being producers of various products we also run and host courses and workshops for both children and adults.
We would primarily consider ourselves as ‘craftworkers’. Whether that is when we are engaged in the heritage craft of charcoal making or coppicing, or crafting a piece of furniture from our harvested timber or crafting an exciting educational workshop!

The Tarka Trail is named after Henry Williamson’s famous novel “Tarka the Otter”. The story was based around many of the locations along the Trail, which follows the route of a disused railway line between Braunton and Meeth. With up to 21 miles of safe, level and traffic-free riding on offer, a bike is the perfect way of exploring the area.
Our cycle hire centre is conveniently located beside Barnstaple Railway Station, with large, inexpensive parking and is the perfect start point for exploring North Devon by bike. We take great pride in looking after our hire fleet, and with an extensive range of over 130 cycles available, we have a bike to suit everyone.
On our routes you will experience some of the best of the Tarka Trail and have the chance to explore the beautiful estuary of the rivers Taw and Torridge. En route to either Bideford or Braunton for refreshment, you can take in the countryside Devon is so famed for and enjoy a truly great day out!
