The Devonshire Association Geology Section arranges an annual programme of lectures (held on Saturday mornings around the county) and a mix of field trips. Proud that one of the main founders of the Devonshire Association, William Pengelly of Torquay, was a geologist, the Geology Section is open to all who may be interested, regardless of their prior knowledge (if any) of geology.
Day field trips (advance booking is needed) are primarily in Devon and adjacent counties, but the group also ventures further afield on Spring weekend trips (recently to Somerset, West Cornwall, Bath, Shropshire, Pembroke) to see how the rocks of Devon fit within a wider geological framework. The annual Autumn week-long trip has visited geological sites both in Britain and abroad, including Brittany, Jersey, the Czech Republic, Northumbria, the Lake District and North Wales.
Close links are maintained with other geological societies in the South West and occasional joint events are held. The section is affiliated to the Geologists’ Association.

The Devonshire Association Botany Section was founded in 1908 to promote the study and enjoyment of Devon’s wild plants, including bryophytes (mosses), lichens and fungi.
An annual program of field meetings, some of which are aimed at beginners, is held in a wide range of Devon locations. Through these meetings and other activities, the Section helps its members and the general public to improve their identification skills and to record the distribution of Devon’s plants. It also offers expert assistance at events run by like-minded bodies showcasing the county’s wildlife.
In 2016, the Section produced a prolifically illustrated book, entitled A New Flora of Devon, which features new species accounts and new distribution maps. This is the first book to be published on the subject since the Atlas of Devon Flora in 1984, and is an important account of the state of Devon’s vascular plants.
The Section is the major source of botanical expertise in the county.

The Devonshire Association Buildings Section presents a programme of events offering a range of visits, lectures and presentations. Since its beginnings in 1987, the Section Recorders have identified and recorded buildings under threat from development or neglect, particularly farm buildings. We are also developing a series of training days in researching, conserving and recording buildings.
The year begins in March with the Spring Meeting, traditionally the platform for the Recorders to present their work but also including an invited speaker. From April to July and in September and October there are visits to buildings of interest. These range from castles to country houses to cottages, catering for a wide range of interests.
In the past we have visited the Royal William Yard in Plymouth, Kilworthy Farm near Tavistock, Weare Gifford Hall near Torrington, Higher Uppacott on Dartmoor, and many historic churches. The year concludes in November at our AGM, which is held in one of the many interesting towns around the county and includes an invited speaker and a visit to local notable buildings.

The History Section of the Devonshire Association can trace its beginning in the 1930 edition of the Transactions in a report from the Parochial History Section. The History Section was officially formed on 31 October 1919 with 97 members.
More recent years have seen the Section organise a range of talks and presentations. Some of these have been fairly academic while many have provided a general background with topics on various aspects of Devon’s history. There have also been visits to places of historical interest and social events. During the past two years several events have been organised with the help of the Devon Heritage Centre, now the South West Heritage Trust.
The Section is currently seeking to respond to the challenge brought about by changes in the wider community. To meet these challenges, the Section is looking to work more closely with other DA sections and branches as well as like-minded organisations in Devon. We look forward to increasing our membership by holding more events across the county with the objective of engaging with local knowledge.

The Devonshire Association Industrial Archaeology (IA) Section was formed in 2012, and there are now over 100 of the Association’s members who have signed up and receive details of the Section’s events on a regular basis.
We provide an annual programme of six talks on a wide range of topics during Autumn/Winter and a number of field trips during the warmer part of the year. Past field trips have included visits to mining sites on Dartmoor, guided town walks to view features of the industrial past, and factory visits.
We aim to maintain contact with other South-West IA societies and in 2016 the Section organised and hosted the annual South West and Wales regional Industrial Archaeology Conference. A number of members of our neighbouring IA Society in Somerset are also members of our Section.
Some of our members carry out their own research and the Section aims to encourage and support their activities.
