The Exeter & Teign Valley Railway is an embryonic reconstruction project occupying part of the goods yard of the disused Christow Station, which nestles beside the river in largely unspoilt Devon countryside.
The project is not a tourist attraction and is nowhere near being able to open to the public like the many places that stuff the leaflet dispensers. At present, the E. & T.V.R. is essentially a little composite which does no more than conjure up a railway atmosphere in a pleasant setting.
Informal access is permitted upon purchase of a platform ticket and quarter-mile round trips can be enjoyed in Jenny Wren. The railway can be opened specially for parties of adults or escorted children.
The most popular facility is the camping on rail which has attracted a following of its own. People have come to the site from as near as Christow and as far as New Zealand; for some, railway camping has put the Teign Valley on the world map.
Occasional guided walks are organized, which reveal some of the hidden remains of railways and extractive industries.
The railway’s Building Department undertakes a small amount of specialist work for external customers.
Behind the scenes, plotting and scheming continues in an effort to find the means to break out from the confines of the established starting point and commence railway reconstruction in earnest.

The Devon Historic Buildings Trust was formed in 1973 as a joint initiative with Devon’s Conservation Forum and Devon County Council for the benefit of the people of Devon and the nation at large, to ensure a future for historic buildings and structures of particular architectural, historical or constructional interest.
Over the last 43 years the Trust has acquired buildings of particular merit that might have otherwise been demolished or allowed to collapse, and restored them for appropriate uses of today. Proceeds from this work were then available for further acquisition and restoration. Over the years the continuing support from grant funds, supplemented by private and commercial donations and with careful stewardship, the Trust continues with its work.

From peat bogs to sea caves and ancient oak woodlands to estuaries, Devon has an amazing diversity of landscapes and wildlife.
However, whilst our environment may look beautiful we are very much part of the global Ecological and Climate Emergencies. The loss and decline of Devon’s wildlife has accelerated rapidly over the last 50 years and many of our natural resources are damaged. We all need to take urgent action to restore and enhance the environment which underpins our lives.
Devon Local Nature Partnership (LNP) is a strategic collaboration of a huge range of organisations, groups and individuals committed to working together to tackle Devon’s Ecological Emergency.
Our three goals are to:
- Deliver a Nature Recovery Network – Protect and restore a network of wildlife rich habitats and natural systems across the county in towns, villages, rural areas and at sea.
- Respond to the Climate Emergency – Use natural solutions to capture carbon and increase our resilience to climate change and flooding.
- Connect people and nature – Support communities and businesses to value and enhance the natural environment which underpins our health, wellbeing and economy.
