Bideford Railway Heritage Centre manages the Bideford station site and Instow signal box, both of which are on the former railway line from Barnstaple to Bideford in north Devon. The old railway line is now part of the popular Tarka Trail and so our two sites provide points of interest to cyclists and walkers alike, as well as to the more general visitor. In particular there are a visitor centre, interactive interpretation centre and cafe at Bideford station.

The multi-award winning South Devon Railway is one of Devon’s and the West Country’s best loved tourist attractions and is the longest established steam railway in the south west, celebrating over 50 years in preservation.
The SDR is a seven mile former Great Western Railway branch line, built in 1872, which runs along the stunning valley of the River Dart between Buckfastleigh and Totnes. We run steam trains with heritage rolling stock and offer a wonderful all day, all weather attraction for families and people of all ages.

A Community Light Railway for the 21st Century
Combe Rail CIO is proposing a modern, light railway between Barnstaple and Braunton. The North Devon Local Plan already urges the protection of former railway routes, to allow for future re-instatement. This former railway route is 98% intact, with sufficient width to accommodate a new single-track railway line alongside the Tarka Trail and South West Coast Path.
It’s now accepted that new and re-opened railways unlock economic growth. The success of the Borders Railway in Scotland is a spectacular example of this. The challenge of North Devon’s ever-growing population demands similar, forward-looking infrastructure planning.

Keeping it Natural
We believe the wonderful natural fibre that is wool has a great future. For today's environmentally conscious consumer it has great credentials as well as a long history. Natural wool is incredible warm, hardwearing, sustainable and, unlike synthetic fibres, it is fully biodegradeable.
All our wool is either from our own North Devon flock or sourced from local sheep, helping to support other small farms. It is then taken to a nearby mill for processing into quality pure wool yarns - available in natural fleece colours or coloured with natural mineral dyes. Have a look through our little farm shop to see our full range of colours and plies.

twool is an award-winning British wool brand manufacturing a range of products made from rare-breed Whiteface Dartmoor wool. With heritage manufacturing at its heart, the twool story started with the need for a British sustainable garden twine as an alternative to imported jute.
British wool is an under-used natural resource in the UK so developing a British wool brand using this raw material seemed a natural choice. Championing one of Britain's ancient rare-breeds is important for the history, heritage and future of the breed: the qualities of Whiteface Dartmoor wool are also perfect for twool products. As well as purchasing through British Wool, we also collect wool clip annually from small producers on Dartmoor providing a vital route to market for their wool.
Building on the basic range of garden twine, twool have developed a successful range of woolly bags, dog leads and hats. twool are a completely sustainable brand and this includes taking care with packaging design to ensure minimal waste and using up-cycled leather waste from British leather goods manufacturers for bags and dog lead trim.
twool is a wonderful collaboration of people who bring their unique skills to the brand: from the farmers on Dartmoor to the weavers in Yorkshire, everyone has their role to play. In fact, there are over 12 processes on the journey from wool to spool, lead, woolly bag or hat!
With full product provenance the twool story is as unique as it's products.
