Down Farm is a social enterprise. We are an organic market garden and community hub situated just outside of Winkleigh, North Devon. We grow fantastic vegetables, salads, herbs & fruits, using only hand tools. Our aim is to grow produce that benefits us, our wildlife the soil and our community.
We grow using the "no-dig" method meaning we do not invert the soil. We preserve the soil structure by adding compost every year to the top of our growing beds, helping the soil life flourish. A happy soil lets us grow produce that is full of goodness and bags of flavour.
Our food is for our community. All our produce is eaten within a 30 mile radius of the farm. We invite our community to be a part of the farm, joining us for events and volunteering at the farm. Keep an eye on our events page for this year's happenings.

One of the first UK companies to offer organic seeds, Tamar Organics started as a small organic market garden in 1994. Ever since then they have been encouraging people to grow organically for a healthier environment, improved soil and improved biodiversity. Tamar Organics is registered with the soil association, and all their vegetable, herb and flower seeds are organic. Trill Farm is a 300 acre mixed organic farm set in the rolling hills and woodlands of east Devon. Romy Fraser bought the farm in 2008 with the aim of developing an education centre and community of small businesses that could work together to use the land's resources.

Vital Seeds was founded in 2018, in response to the lack of availability of UK-grown organic and open-pollinated seed. Most of the seed planted in the UK is actually produced many thousands of miles away in countries with a drier climate and cheaper labour. This means that the varieties we grow are unable to adapt to our specific climatic conditions over time. It also means that we do not have control over this vital element of our food system, which we believe is very important. In the last 100 years we have lost 90% of the diversity in our food crops globally, mainly due to the industrialization of the food system and wide-spread use of proprietary F1 hybrid varieties. As all of our seeds are open-pollinated you can save your own seed from them year after year.
