The Avocet Line is a busy, thriving and much-loved railway that runs the 9.5 miles along the eastern side of Devon’s Exe Estuary from the city of Exeter to the seaside resort of Exmouth. It’s scenic, but also a vital resource for daily travel to work, school and college and shopping. This website, edited and managed by the line’s rail users group (ALRUG), aims to tell you about many aspects of the line’s past, present and future. For more information about our 5 year vision for the line please read our manifesto, which was launched at the AGM in October 2015.

The Tarka Valley Railway in Devon, England, is a proposed heritage railway based on plans to rebuild the Barnstaple to Halwill Junction railway line. So far only a short demonstration line has been set up, and planning permission was granted for 300 ft (91 metres) of track in the direction of Bideford. The railway has been fenced off from the Tarka Trail ensuring the safety of all involved. Restoration of various items of railway stock is currently under way.

Combe Rail was set up in 2015 to preserve the heritage of the Barnstaple-Ilfracombe railway (1874-1970.) After extensive consultation, and surveys of the route, we are launching two exciting projects: a Railway Heritage Trail
and a Community Light Railway. Promising discussions for both projects are in progress with North Devon Council.
Combe Rail is a Charity (No.1164083) and we can reclaim Gift Aid on membership subscriptions and donations. Join us today to rebuild the railway!

In addition to the reopening of the Exeter to Plymouth via Okehampton line, Railfuture Devon and Cornwall advocates trackbed protection of a number of other closed lines where there is potential for future reopening. These include:
- Bideford to Barnstaple (for service to Exeter),
- Launceston to Okehampton (via Halwill or Lydford for service to Exeter),
- Ilfracombe to Barnstaple,
- Tiverton to Tiverton Junction (Willand) (for service to Exeter),
- Sidmouth to Feniton (for service to Exeter).
We are supportive of local groups wishing to restore rail services to Wadebridge, Bude and Ashburton, but in the meantime seek improved bus/rail connections.

We grow trees from locally collected seed in our own nurseries, nurtured by lots of local volunteers, and then use them to recreate woodland that has become a rare sight in the countryside.
Here at Moor Trees we have planted over 100,000 trees with the help of volunteers and generous donations and we are on a mission to keep going.
This last year, we have grown over 15,000 native broadleaf trees from seed in our nurseries and we are about to plant them to create semi-natural woodlands around Dartmoor and help combat climate change.

Wool on the Exe is a community fibre arts space designed to provide local people with a place to learn, be creative, make new friends and connect to their community. The idea grew out of two successful projects we started and have been running for the last few years - Neighbourworks and The Knit-Stop.
We learned a lot while developing and running both of these initiatives. One of the things we learned is that there is an abundance of beautiful British fibre right in our backyard. But most people don't have an opportunity to see, feel or use it because the makers are small and the yarn market is dominated by the bigger brands.
The other thing we learned is that people really love to come together to share with and support each other, learn new skills and expand their circle of friends. Many Neighbourworks knitters are older, widowed women and they appreciate the opportunity to come together and use their time and talent to benefit their community. And it's not just older people who are isolated. Our groups are made up of people of all ages and abilities and the common bond is a love of making and a desire to connect.
So we thought it was time for Exeter to have a space that supports these things. A place where local people who are experts in knitting, crochet, spinning, felting, weaving and dyeing can share their skills in a space that is warm, welcoming and nourishing for the spirit. We will continue to support Neighbourworks groups and plant the seeds for more Knit-Stop groups in the community. We aim to have lots of opportunities for people to connect - through events, projects, and charity knitting initiatives.
We also wanted to have a place where local fibre artists could sell their products. You will find beautiful wood bowls, hand-made bags, felted art, cushions, cards and beaded accessories in our shop. If you're a fibre artist and are interested in Wool on the Exe, please get in touch.

The Incorporation of Weavers, Fullers & Shearmen is the historic guild of Exeter's ancient cloth trade.
The Guilds and Incorporation have existed in Exeter for nearly 600 years and have occupied Tuckers Hall since 1471. Both the Incorporation and the Hall have a remarkable story with a glorious and continuous history.
The wealth of Exeter in the mid 17th and early 18th centuries was created as a direct result of the woollen cloth trade in the city, controlled by the members of the Incorporation. On the back of this prosperity, many became Merchant Venturers and later Bankers.
With mechanisation and loss of overseas trade, Exeter's affluence waned along with the Incorporation's membership, declining significantly almost to the point of extinction. However, by adapting to the changing climate the Incorporation survived and since the Second World War has prospered with membership once again increasing and playing its part in the Civic life of Exeter.
The Incorporation is recognised as one of the few surviving established provincial Guilds with strong links to associated City of London Guilds.

The Ecological Land Cooperative develops affordable, low impact, smallholdings for ecological agriculture. The high costs of land and rural housing make it nearly impossible for new entrants to farming to establish a farm business. By providing affordable and secure smallholdings, we are helping to address this crisis.
Determined to turn good ideas into reality, to have a positive influence and to give hope to those choosing to live sustainably, we have designed a model for creating affordable, ecological smallholdings. Having successfully developed our first cluster of farms in Mid Devon, we have begun work on our second site in East Sussex and purchased our third site on the Gower.
We show that small-scale ecological farming CAN work in today’s economy. Sustainably managed smallholdings provide low-impact livelihoods, regenerate land and produce good, healthy food for local communities, increasing sustainability and resilience, and improving ecology and biodiversity for future generations.
By supporting new entrants into ecological agriculture we help revitalise rural communities. We want to see a living, working countryside where land is valued as a way to enhance the good of communities and the natural world.
