In the 1970s Muslims in Exeter offered their daily prayers in their home. The majority of Muslims who first moved to Exeter were involved in the restaurant trade. On special occasions such as Eid, they would invite the Muslim community to celebrate together at their restaurants.
In the mid-1970s, Exeter university students from around the Muslim world came together and started organising communal prayers and events. They started by hiring the university hall for Friday prayer and as the numbers increased, the Muslim community recognised the need for a permanent space where they could pray together and socialise. In light of this a meeting was organised, first attended by 17 people, both Exeter University students and local businessmen.
On 1st December 1976, they purchased no. 15 York Road.
As the number of attendees increased from 80 to 120, more fundraising took place and no. 14 York Road was also purchased. The fundraising did not stop there; the numbers continued to grow and so did the need for more space, and so the community was able to purchase land from the school next door and in 2011 managed to complete the South West's first purpose-built mosque. The building you see today.
There are now over 200 Muslims in the city, of all ages, races, professions and personalities.

At Devon Biodiversity Records Centre (DBRC) we collect, manage and make available records of wildlife. We manage a database of over 4.5 million records which is updated by 2,000-5,000 records a month. All of our records are validated and verified. We also manage data on wildlife habitats and geological sites. DBRC is one of a national network of Local Environmental Records Centres in the UK and has been providing information about wildlife for over fifteen years.
DBRC is run on a ‘not for profit’ basis. We were set up and are hosted by Devon Wildlife Trust to act a central reference point for anyone who wants to know about wildlife in Devon. DBRC is supported by a large partnership of organisations and individuals including Devon County Council. We have a permanent staff of five people at DBRC and up to ten people working on a voluntary basis or on short contracts.

“The foodbank was there when we really needed it, it was an absolute lifeline.”
We don’t think anyone in our community should have to face going hungry. That’s why the Exeter Foodbank provides three days’ nutritionally balanced emergency food and support to local people who are referred to us in crisis.
Every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. A simple box of food makes a big difference, with foodbanks helping prevent crime, housing loss, family breakdown and mental health problems.
Our foodbank works using a voucher referral system. Find out more about how we work.
We know that anyone can find themselves at crisis point for a number of different reasons.
In order to provide the most appropriate help for the circumstances of your situation we work with local agencies. If they feel you are struggling to put food on the table, they will issue you with a foodbank voucher. The local agency can also provide long term support if needed to help address some of the issues behind the reasons for your crisis.
Our foodbank works with a number of different agencies, such as Citizens Advice, Exeter City Council, children’s centres and health visitors. To find out more about the agencies that hold our vouchers and how you can get help, please contact us.
When you visit a referral agency they will take some basic details from you to complete the voucher. This will help them to identify the cause of your crisis and offer practical guidance. It also means we are able to prepare suitable emergency food for the right number of people. Due to the Covid-19 situation, the majority of referrers to Exeter Foodbank are now also able to make e-referrals – they may be able to assess your situation remotely and give you a referral code via phone, text or email without seeing you face-to-face.

Exeter Food Action rescues excess food from shops and suppliers, and redistributes it to charity organisations that feed people in Exeter.
We work with wholesalers, manufacturers and retailers, who supply us with food that they would otherwise throw away. Together we stop perfectly eatable food going to landfill, incineration, anaerobic digestion, or being used as animal food.
All food received is donated to organisations that support more vulnerable people in Exeter, including those affected by hunger, homelessness, family breakdown, low incomes, poverty, benefit uncertainty, abuse, poor nutrition and those receiving palliative care. So we share food with soup kitchens, hostels, food banks, community cafés, schools, hospices, and others. Any group can access our food as long as they are local to us, and do not make a profit from the sale of the food. Food is not resold or given to individuals.
Every year, we rescue over 30 tonnes of food, and save the groups that receive it over £80,000.

The Fairtrade Foundation awarded Exeter Fairtrade city status in 2004. This means that it is formally recognised as a city with strong support for Fairtrade by local residents, businesses, schools, faith communities and community groups.
We host a Fairtrade city steering group which co-ordinates promotional activities.
There is particular focus in Fairtrade Fortnight in early Spring. For ten years Exeter has received a visit from a Fairtrade producer who has met the Lord Mayor, spoken at a Fairtrade Dinner hosted at Exeter College and met the people of Exeter on the High Street.
In addition. regular activities have taken place at summer festivals, including Exeter Respect and at Christmas in Princesshay.

As part of Safer Devon, the Exeter Community Safety Partnership (CSP) is a multi-agency strategic group created with the sole purpose of ‘making a safer city’.
Exeter CSP comprises a number of member organisations and includes representatives from agencies with a statutory responsibility for community safety, as well as partners from key voluntary and not-for-profit agencies.
Members of the partnership meet on a quarterly basis to discuss emerging community issues and strategies that aim to reduce the levels of crime and anti-social behaviour in local neighbourhoods and reduce the fear of such activities across the district.
The responsibilities of the partnership are divided into a number of operational groups that each look at a specific community issue. Examples include groups investigating anti-social behaviour, domestic and sexual violence and abuse, the night time economy, street attachment and hate crime.
