Whether you’re a newcomer to Exeter or have lived here since before the War we’re sure you’ll love this great little city. It has a vibrant charm and a fascinating mix of buildings, and people! From the Roman Wall and Norman Castle to the lively city centre venues, shops and restaurants there is something for everyone. But a city is always changing, and those changes can be for the better or for the worse.
Exeter Civic Society was set up to care for Exeter and make sure that further redevelopments are of the highest possible standard for our city and for our quality of life. If you want to keep track of changes to the city, or find out more about its history you have come to the right place. Not only do we monitor new developments but we have talks about Exeter’s history and visits to local places, some of which you may not even know exist.

The Devon Historic Buildings Trust was formed in 1973 as a joint initiative with Devon’s Conservation Forum and Devon County Council for the benefit of the people of Devon and the nation at large, to ensure a future for historic buildings and structures of particular architectural, historical or constructional interest.
Over the last 43 years the Trust has acquired buildings of particular merit that might have otherwise been demolished or allowed to collapse, and restored them for appropriate uses of today. Proceeds from this work were then available for further acquisition and restoration. Over the years the continuing support from grant funds, supplemented by private and commercial donations and with careful stewardship, the Trust continues with its work.

Our groups help local people enjoy walking and protect the places we all love to walk. Most groups organise regular walks led by local experts – a great way to get outside, make new friends and discover how walking boosts your health and happiness. You’re very welcome to try walking with us, or to get involved in looking after paths and green spaces and opening up new places to explore.
A warm welcome from the Devon Bootlegs. The Bootlegs have over 100 members from all over Devon. For Sunday walks we meet at 9:30 am, Bude Street, Exeter (behind the bus station) to arrange car sharing, unless otherwise stated. Please come and join us. We also have a lively social programme for members!

Working to make the case for a more resilient, inclusive and better railway in Devon and Cornwall

Working together for a Dementia Friendly Exeter
The past year has been immensely challenging for everyone, especially people affected by dementia. As we finally emerge into Spring and a relaxation of the lockdown, everybody connected with the Alliance wishes you a safe and enjoyable time.
We believe that a dementia friendly Exeter requires greater community awareness and opportunities to live well with dementia.
We understand that change comes when people commit to practical actions that help build a dementia friendly community.
With over 850,000 people living with a dementia diagnosis in the country and no cure yet, it is vital we continue to consider how as a society we can collaborate and make a difference for those living with the condition and their families.
As an Alliance we value all of our members and supporters across the city and beyond who are behind our mission and make the alliance what it has become today, we thank you all.
