It is because of your support that we are able to continue to restore wild places, protect Devon's wildlife, and campaign for nature's recovery. So thank you - you have made a real difference to Devon's wildlife. Together we can continue to carry out vital conservation work for the benefit of wildlife and people.

Plymouth Athenaeum - Zero Carbon Community Led Housing
Tuesday 09 February 2021, 12:30pm - 01:30pm
Alistair Macpherson, CEO of Plymouth Energy Community (PEC), discusses Zero Carbon Community Led Housing & PEC Homes' ambitions in the area.
About this Event
Join us as Alistair Macpherson, chief executive of Plymouth Energy Community (PEC), kicks off our 2021 series of lunchtime talks with 'Zero Carbon Community Led Housing'.
The talk will cover PEC Homes' ambitions and updates on their Plymouth-based community led housing project.
The talk will include a Q&A session on PEC Homes, its works and ambitions.
PEC Homes aim to create genuinely affordable, healthy homes in the heart of Plymouth, where the community can be part of the solution to tackle fuel poverty and climate change.
They want to use excellent design and clean energy to build affordable homes fit for the future. PEC Homes want to give local people the chance to choose a comfortable home with low bills and a fair rent; one that supports a sustainable lifestyle, promotes quality health and well-being and importantly, provides a stable, long-term home to be proud of.
PEC Homes aim to offer an ethical and innovative management model that allows our community to buy community shares and cooperatively run this business, just like they do with their solar installations. This way, local people can plan, design and determine the outcome, potentially earn a fair return and ensure any profits are re-invested to benefit the whole community.
They want local people to help with the details: design, waste, energy, transport, food, and ownership and bring it together to shape how we make it happen.

Smart Citizens - Material Ethics: The Sustainability Conundrum
Wednesday 17 February 2021, 05:30pm - 07:00pm
When it comes to designing and making things, what does it mean to be 'sustainable'? What if one cannot attain a sustainable perfection? In the Smart Citizens first Sustainable Design Talk, Owen Groombridge will take us through the design and making process, with a focus on how we use material and energy. He will explore how we can find a balance between achieving our design ambitions whilst making our designs in a sustainable way.
About the expert:
Owen Groombridge is a technical demonstrator, short course tutor, and a researcher for the European funded Impact Lab, at Fab Lab Plymouth. His Impact Lab research involves the design of emergency surgical procedure models which are easy to fabricate at a local level, and use environmentally safe materials.
Owen's interest includes materials, material ethics, and processes; how to get the most out of something with as small a negative impact as possible.
