Look below and around the website for Coastwise activities in North Devon which has some of the most spectacular and varied coastal scenery in the country and wonderful seascapes. The coastal and marine life is amongst the richest in the country.
Wild and unspoiled places are interspersed by coastal communities and popular resorts where livelihoods owe much to the coast and sea.
It is the aim of Coastwise, an independent community initiative, to increase understanding of the coast, its wildlife, and its importance to North Devon in the past, present and the future. We do this through sharing knowledge, undertaking conservation activities and projects, and addressing current issues.

NDAS was established in 1959, and for many years concentrated on providing lectures and visits for members. The society merged with North Devon Rescue, a campaigning organisation which had been instrumental in ensuring proper recording and excavation in the area, particularly during Barnstaple's major redevelopment in the 1980s.
The society continues to lobby and campaign for proper investigation and preservation of North Devon's physical heritage, including, for example, continuing threats against the Braunton Great Field.

A non-party-political platform that puts the shared values and practical vision of the community at the heart of local governance, empowering communities to across Torridge to transform their local economies and wellbeing for the benefit of all.
Towns and cities across the UK are transforming their communities through non party political platforms, made up of the community and steered by the vision of the community, taking power.
Their local economies and well being are being transformed through community wealth schemes, creating sustainable local enterprise, community owned renewable energy cooperatives, ending outsourcing and supporting local businesses instead, protecting against the encroachment of corporate ownership and reclaiming the commons through land trusts.

The Tarka Valley Railway in Devon, England, is a proposed heritage railway based on plans to rebuild the Barnstaple to Halwill Junction railway line. So far only a short demonstration line has been set up, and planning permission was granted for 300 ft (91 metres) of track in the direction of Bideford. The railway has been fenced off from the Tarka Trail ensuring the safety of all involved. Restoration of various items of railway stock is currently under way.

The Society has been active since 1973. We host regular monthly meetings, hold public events and own an observatory with a large aperture telescope.
The Society welcomes new members of all levels of expertise and is particularly happy to help those new to astronomy. Don't worry if you don't own a telescope or even a set of binoculars; all you need to start with is an interest in astronomy.

Devon has lost most of its traditional orchards of large ‘standard’ trees - valuable because of their beauty, history, wildlife and rich variety of local apples. Since 1991 orchard enthusiasts in the northern half of Devon, Save Our Orchards which became Orchards Live in 2002, have been reversing this decline with real achievements:
*Running over 100 training events on all aspects of orchard restoration, establishment, management and production.
*Establishing Annual Apple Day at Rosemoor (with RHS) and Apple Fair at South Molton.
*Organising informal walks, social events and networking opportunities.
*Locating old fruit varieties for propagation as well as listing and photographing them.
*Working with people of Landkey to establish first new mazzard green for a century.
*Establishing a Demonstration Orchard with a local landowner.
*Acquiring cider and juice making kit and other equipment for members to use.
Orchards Live is part of the charitable activities of the Dartington North Devon Charitable Trust (No 1142258). Its voluntary committee meets bi-monthly. Our 250 members pay a modest annual subscription.

Sustainable Fish Education is a 'not for profit' community project that runs a programme of fish tasting, recipes and education sessions for schools and public in Cornwall and North Devon promoting the advantages and taste of local sustainably caught fish.
Eat local fish: as a result of the 2020 coronavirus restrictions inshore fishermen are facing desperate times as restaurants are shut and export markets closed. Buy locally caught fish and give the community a boost.

The Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009 (MaCAA) introduced a new framework for managing the marine environment and providing greater access to it. This Act of Parliament replaced Sea Fisheries Committees with Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authorities (IFCA’s) and is fundamental to the work of D&S IFCA.
The Devon and Severn IFCA is the largest of the ten separate IFCA districts and has two separate coastlines. The area of the District is 4522km² and is defined in the Statutory Instrument (2010 No. 2212). The D&S IFCA District includes the areas of Devon, Somerset, Gloucestershire County Councils; Bristol City and Plymouth City Councils; North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Councils and all adjacent waters out to six nautical miles offshore or the median line with Wales.
“D&S IFCA will lead, champion and manage a sustainable marine environment and inshore fisheries, by successfully securing the right balance between social, environmental and economic benefits to ensure healthy seas, sustainable fisheries and a viable industry”
The Full Authority is comprised of 30 members drawn from relevant Local Authorities (Councillors), General Members (appointed to the Authority by the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) and Statutory Appointees representing the MMO, the Environment Agency (EA) and Natural England (NE). D&S IFCA is funded via several different funding Authorities (councils) with an additional contribution from central government. Officers are employed by D&S IFCA to conduct work on behalf of the Full Authority. D&S IFCA has ten full time officers and one part-time office manager. The main office is situated in Brixham with one officer located in the Severn area of the District.
