Lloyd Maunder was born into a large family in Witheridge, Devon in 1873. In those days it was quite common for farmers to kill their own livestock and sell through local butchers. Lloyd was therefore born into a family tradition of meat production and he formed his own company trading wholesale meat in 1898. Lloyd Maunders Butchers is currently made up of 12 shops across the south west.

We are a high welfare red tractor approved pig farm in East Devon. We have been farming pigs here for the last 20 years. We breed all our own pigs here on the farm for our highly successful award winning pork, bacon, sausages and hog roasts. Our Devon Pork Sausage recently won Champion Product in the 2019 Taste of the West Awards.

The May Family have been farming at Netherexe since 1975, and up the road at Raddon since 1919. The farm is five miles north of Exeter, running a 4 mile stretch of river bank against the river Exe, lush green meadows produce plenty of summer grazing where the family have a herd of Devon cattle, home bred Dorset sheep. They grow wheat, barley & oats for the beef youngstock, fodder beet and green crop for the sheep.

We are the only Shepherds in the world to farm all three of Dartmoor’s native longwool sheep. Now sadly all rare breeds, our sheep were bred for a time when wool was profitable and lambs were given the time they needed to mature and grow naturally.

We have a relatively small, family farm, run by husband and wife team Richard and Ruth Kelsey. Richard is a vegetable farmers son and has been growing veg himself for 36 years. The main part of his working life was spent growing vegetables for the large supermarkets, some 5 million cabbage and 15 million spring onions per year! An unease with the imbalance of power in the trading relationship with the supermarkets and the intensive methods of farming necessary led us to look for an alternative market for our wares which lead us to Devon and the birth of our local veg and meat box delivery service .

The focus of our shop is to support local producers and the local economy. We source products where possible as locally as we can to minimise food miles and consequently carbon footprints. Our milk comes from our own herd of Quicke’s cows. Our cows are grass-fed almost year-round and spend most of their lives outdoors. A combination of our breeding programme and the animals’ diet gives us the milk we’re looking for in cheesemaking.
However, we don’t keep our own goats on the farm. Our expertise is cows, and it would be a whole new enterprise to start farming goats. So we focus on managing our herd of dairy cows, and we buy goat’s milk in from other farmers in the South West of England – supporting our local farming community along the way.
