Transition Network is a charity which works to inspire, encourage, connect, support and train communities world-wide as they self-organise around the Transition model.

We work with and alongside a grass-roots movement of independent Transition initiative community groups and Transition Hubs in many countries.  We aim to evolve as an organisation alongside the Transition movement, which is changing and deepening, while being clear about the roles that we undertake.

A strength of the Transition movement is that people working at local community level can learn from others in communities around the world.  Transition Network is constantly looking for ways to encourage and enable the sharing of ideas, learning and support, across and beyond the Transition movement.  Being part of a network means we can create change more quickly and more effectively, drawing on each other’s experiences and insights.

What is Transition?

Transition is a movement that has been growing since 2005. It is about communities stepping up to address the big challenges they face by starting local. By coming together, they are able to crowd-source solutions. They seek to nurture a caring culture, one focused on supporting each other, both as groups or as wider communities.

In practice, they are reclaiming the economy, sparking entrepreneurship, reimagining work, reskilling themselves and weaving webs of connection and support. It’s an approach that has spread now to over 50 countries, in thousands of groups: in towns, villages, cities, Universities, schools. One of the key ways it spreads is through telling inspiring stories, and that’s what we aim to do on this website. We really hope you feel inspired to take part, we’d be honoured if you did.

Head, Heart & Hands

Doing Transition successfully is about finding a balance between these:

The Head: we act on the basis of the best information and evidence available and apply our collective intelligence to find better ways of living.

The Heart: we work with compassion, valuing and paying attention to the emotional, psychological, relational and social aspects of the work we do.

The Hands: we turn our vision and ideas into a tangible reality, initiating practical projects and starting to build a new, healthy economy in the place we live.

Do Transition

To help you get Transition started in your community we have produced ‘The Essential Guide to Doing Transition’ (available in several languages). It gives you an overview of Transition and outlines all the activities that that can help you to develop Transition in your community, as well as being illustrated with great stories from around the world.

Don’t worry if you feel overwhelmed after reading this guide, as we have also created a whole range of activities, guides and info sheets in the 7 essential ingredients section to support you through this process. Many of them are linked to from within the Essential Guide.

You will notice that this guide is about the processes you can use, it does not tell you what projects you should be doing or what issues you should be focusing on. This is because Transition is about local responses to problems and it is up to you to decide what to focus your attention on and how to frame Transition for your community. Lots of groups have developed Transition without carrying out all the activities mentioned in this guide, so feel free to do it your own way, we would love to hear what you have found to work.

Also don’t forget there is a Transition Training called Launch that is a great introduction to Transition and how to start. We thank you for taking this first step and welcome you to the Transition family, a global family taking steps at a local level to create a better world.
