Sidwell Street

Exeter Views Sidwell Street starts with one of Exeter's biggest names in shopping!

Sidwell Street joins the top end of High Street at the crossroads between Waterstones the bookshop and the old Debenhams building now occupied by one of the city's most popular retailers, John Lewis. It has limited street parking available for the motorist, but there's plenty of parking spaces within the nearby King William Street and Bampfylde Street car parks. Sidwell Street is also located close to the Exeter Bus Station as well as the main Park and Ride stop in Paris Street.

Exeter Memories Although outside the city wall, St Sidwells and Sidwell Street which runs through the middle, is an important area in the development of Exeter, as the street was part of the ancient trackway between Stoke Hill and the High Street. This was the easiest route into the city for heavily laden carts from the north east, as routes from other directions crossed steep valleys or had sharp gradients. William the Conqueror, and Henry VII were both welcomed (or not) through the Eastgate, at the head of Sidwell Street.
