With today’s ‘stack it high and sell it cheap’ attitude, animal welfare is unfortunately not very high on the list of priorities. Box fed livestock and overcrowded poultry houses, production line slaughter and processing can only lead to an inferior product. Mass production processes add water during bacon curing to speed the process up and, we hasten to add, that milky residue in your frying pan is the water coming out! Sausage products containing emulsifiers to ensure all the gristles and rinds can be pureed and incorporated. This is the future we are told. Fortunately, here at John May Family Butchers, we don’t listen to that!

Our philosophy that ‘Tradition is a Step Forward’ is just that: a step forward. Not a step into the past. Prepared and when required, packaged in our state of the art, future proof and 5 star hygiene rated premises, all of our Beef, pork, lamb and poultry is sourced from selected and vetted, higher welfare producers (read more). This product is then prepared with the craft and skill amassed over the 200 years’ experience our butchers have between them.

Beef

All of our beef is sourced from higher welfare farms specialising in Galloway, Beef Shorthorn, Aberdeen Angus bloodlines and our firm favourite, pedigree Red DevonsRadley farm, Bishops Nympton – All the stock on the farm are fed a mainly grass based diet and finished as naturally as possible, producing what we believe to be a succulent and flavoursome product which benefits from the use of traditional British breeds.Mornacott Estate, Bishops Nympton, South Molton – Large pedigree Red Devon herd. Over 100 head of suckler cows producing superb beef, all of which are traditionally finished.

Pork

Richard Gibbins, Stoke Canon – We source the majority of our pork – all of which are gilts (female) from this farm just south of Tiverton, with the remainder sourced within a 20 mile radius of our shop in South Molton. We prefer gilts over boar as the flavour and fat cover is better suited to cooks requirements.

Lamb

The majority of our lamb comes from farms on Exmoor National Park and the fringes as we believe this meat boast a unique taste and tenderness, with the balance purchased through Sedgemoor Market in Bridgwater.

Poultry

Carefully selected from farms around the South West our fresh poultry range includes chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys and corn fed chicken. Singling out Marsh Farm in Bude, Cornwall, our free range chickens and ducks are full of the flavour you would expect from slow grown, grass fed poultry. Complete traceability and higher welfare are the standards that Farmer Keith Wicketts insists on for this sought after product.
