Sir Albert Howard CIE (8 December 1873 – 20 October 1947) was an English botanist, and the first westerner to document and publish the Vedic Indian techniques of sustainable agriculture, now better known as organic farming. After spending considerable time learning from Indian peasants and the pests present in their soil, he called these two his professors. He was a principal figure in the early organic movement. He is considered by many in the English-speaking world to have been, along with Rudolf Steiner and Eve Balfour, one of the key evangelists of ancient Indian techniques of organic agriculture.

Helen Booker is Senior Conservation Officer for RSPB in South West England. Amongst other projects, she has worked on the Seabird Conservation Project on Lundy and the Isles of Scilly.
Helen was one of the people who inspired my Guillemot studies on Lundy. She suggested Guillemot diet and provisioning studies to the Wardens on Lundy in 2006, the year I started working in the Marisco Tavern.

Tony Taylor has organised the bird ringing on Lundy for the Lundy Field Society since 1979 and was the LFS bird recorder from 1980 to 2007. He visited Lundy in the early 70s as part of his study of Common Guillemots for the University of Newcastle. He made the first detailed surveys of Manx Shearwaters on Lundy, which was one of the factors which led to the RSPB-led Seabird Recovery Project on Lundy. His recent work has included a study of the Wheatears that breed on Lundy.
Tony was one of the people who inspired me to continue my Guillemot studies on Lundy.

(Overview) I am interested in the application of evolutionary biology to the behavioural sciences. So I am concerned with the theoretical detail of the application of evolutionary biology, the emergence of stable adapted and adaptive behavioural strategies and also the internal mechanisms that produce such behaviours. However, most of my research activity focuses upon theory and behavioural strategies (see my publications list). You can see my inaugural lecture, in which I discuss these matters, at this link.
Lundy is an island off the North Devon coast, situated in the mouth of the Bristol Channel. The island contains a number of diverse ecologies and many species making it a good choice for ecological and behavioural science field trips.
From 1979 for twenty years my father, David Dickins, ran an animal behaviour field trip on this island and for some of that time I assisted him and other colleagues. In July 2009 I began this trip again with students and colleagues from the University of East London. I was greatly assisted in this by my father and also Stephen Lea and his colleagues at the University of Exeter.
A trip to Lundy will lead to change. The island is a beautiful place that is remote and very different from the city. The opportunity to observe wild animals living their lives is a privilege that is endlessly fascinating. Many questions will arise and the field trip is designed to provide you with the methods to answer them. You will develop scientific skills that are applicable across all species, including humans. You will learn to plan and execute a research project from scratch.

I was born in Plymouth in December 1978 and spent my whole childhood in Devon. My Father worked for 37 years as a Labourer/Painter in Devonport Dockyard until redundancy in 2010. My Mother worked for many years as a Teaching Assistant at the Primary School I attended as a child, continuing the job she loved until only 2 months before she lost her battle with Bowel Cancer in January 2014.

Since being given the honour of becoming your MP in 2015, I have worked day in day out to improve the lives of everyone who lives in Plymouth. From winning funds to set up a Veteran’s Gateway right here in Plymouth, to forcing the Government to do a review of Public Health settlements in Plymouth; from closing the Iraqi Historical Allegations Team abuse of our Servicemen and women, to putting Mental Health at the centre of the city’s health and wellbeing strategy; from working with business and Government to achieve a 600 job investment directly into Plymouth to securing a £5m Government investment to redevelop and improve our outdated rail station.
