'The Square Shop’ in Northlew, a Community Interest Company helps provide the village with food and general supplies and also cut down the necessity to travel to supermarkets and town outlets. It is exceptionally well stocked, mainly because the majority of their products are sourced locally and are without restriction. They always aim to stock local milk, cheese, vegetables, bread and eggs, along with staple cupboard items and, of course, lots of chocolate and sweets. There is an open air market set up in front of the Green Dragon Pub every Friday (weather permitting). Deliveries will be available within the village to assist the elderly and residents with impaired mobility.

The Exmoor Centre is a remote residential centre in the Hoaroak valley near Lynton & Lynmouth where young people and families can enjoy being in the heart of Exmoor. Situated beside Hoaroak Water with direct access to open moorland we have inside dormitory accommodation for ten and in the grounds camping for twenty or so more. The property is divided so that most of the grounds will remain wild; there is a fenced area bordering the river which is the site of the bunkhouse itself.
ST MARY LYNCOMBE EXMOOR TRUST, own the property and became a registered Charity in 2009. The purpose of the Trust is to manage and conserve the area and to provide the opportunity of staying on Exmoor in an isolated situation. As Trustees we must apply the income of the charity “to promote the physical and mental wellbeing of children, young people, families and adults through the provision of outdoor experience within the National Park of Exmoor”.
Established under the will of Dora Cartwright-Williams, it was her wish to see a centre for young people in the Hoaroak Valley in memory of her husband and their life together on Exmoor. Their home in the valley was swept away in the floods that engulfed Lynmouth in August of 1952. The Centre was originally financed and built by the Parent Teacher Association of Ilfracombe Grammar School and opened in 1968.
The Trust today are as enthusiastic as ever with some members having had an involvement from the very start of the project to build the centre. We do occasionally need to co-opt on new Trustees so if you are interested in helping out then please get in touch.

- Restore Britannia to full MCA Certification as a seagoing vessel
- Use her to public benefit through inspiration and engagement in maritime history, heritage, arts and crafts.

Salcombe Community Land Trust focuses on providing only rental housing to the parish. We are doing this through partnership with Aster Housing Association, who will manage and maintain the properties, subject to Salcombe CLT’s own Allocations Policy, prioritising genuinely local residents.
As a holiday destination with its second homes, Salcombe’s housing problem is skewed to such a degree that we are close to being unable to service the tourism businesses that are our bread and butter, because our essential full-time and part-time, permanent employees – the cleaners, gardeners, plumbers, shop, pub and restaurant staff, the volunteers who man our Lifeboat, fire service, after-school groups, clubs and organisations and so on – cannot afford to live here because of our low wage levels and the high property prices, both rental and sale, which are out of range.
